The light arches were popular in downtown Negaunee
Negaunee, MI – January 30, 2021 – Friday was the opening evening of Heikki Lunta 2022! After canceling last year’s activities, the community was ready to get back together for some much-needed winter festivities! Check out images from this weekend below!
Mark and Walt were on the scene to be a part of the downtown activities at Smarty’s Saloon. The Heikki Lunta Bonfire was lit at promptly 5 pm, with people mingling and enjoying the crisp winter air. Soon the Irontown Rail Jam was underway, first open for the public then followed by the official competition. For the majority of the night there was a fish fry up at the Eagles and UP Luge Club activities and sledding! Later in the night, there were Snowshoe Lantern Tours through Historic Old Town!
The second day of the weekend event started brightly at early at 7 am with the Teal Lake Fishing Derby! Many came from all around the for the day-long derby, and shanties were put up all over the lake. Breakfast was being offered at the Eagles as well as at the Elks along with a Bloody Mary Bar!
Watching the sport was very entertaining
Next on the agenda were UP Luge Club activities, sledding, and an open snow show trail! The official Heikki Lunta bonfire was roaring at the end of Iron St all day to keep everyone warm between activities. In St. Paul’s gym, there was an All-School Art Show!
As the day went on, a sledding party hosted by Smarty’s Saloon was hosted in Irontown along with a Gourmet Smores Bar sponsored by Super One Foods and Lions Club of Negaunee! There was another run of Snowshoe Lantern Tours of Old Town, as well as a Freeze Yer Fanny Fatbike Race in the evening! The day and the weekend-long event went out with a band with fireworks over Old Town. Many people came out for the light show and huddled around the bonfire while kids played and watched from the top of the sledding hill.
