Sands Township, MI –August 15, 2015 – Today, at the Marquette County Fairgrounds, Great Lakes Radio’s 103.3 FXD, Honor Credit Union, Hiawathaland Farm Bureau, Rainbow Packing of Escanaba, and the Marquette County Fair gave away approximately 80 pounds of locally raised pork to each of four lucky winners!
4-H kids from all over the Marquette area brought their pigs to be auctioned off in the livestock sale. The auction saw 45 hogs today, with the proceeds going toward college payments for the 4-H youth. Astonishingly, one of these 4-Hers has already paid for two full years of college at Michigan State University with the money made at this annual sale!
While the auctioneer spit out numbers, some of the pigs were bid on for over $7.00 per pound! Cheers and applause erupted from packed livestock barn as buyers made their way off to have their picture taken with their soon-to-be-bacon! Ron Lauren from Honor Credit Union bid on the two pigs purchased for the jackpot in our Win the Meat Giveaway.
Despite the summer heat, Marquette County Fair Board President James Goriesky, Ron Lauren, Dave and Dan Bahrman from Hiawathaland Farm Bureau, and Todd and Rita Noordyk from Great Lakes Radio cheerfully attended the county fair to award half a hog to the four winners! Derick Johnson of Gwinn, Dan Dompierre of Negaunee, Ashley Perry of Ishpeming, and Carter Vincent of Gwinn were all sent home with the winning ticket for 80 pounds of fresh pork! Sue Sicotte from Rainbow Packing of Escanaba (right near the paper mill) was also at the barn today and will be the one to contact to discuss processing of the meat.
Great Lakes Radio congratulates our four winners and thanks our generous sponsors for helping the 4-H kids and purchasing the Win the Meat pigs!
If you did not get to the Marquette County Fair Friday or Saturday, this fun-filled fair will still be running tomorrow, Sunday August 16th, 2015!
