After a lengthy public comment session at their regular meeting Monday night, the Marquette City Commission has postponed a vote on a proposed ordinance banning overnight camping or occupation of any public properties in the City. The Commission voted unanimously to postpone the vote, citing unclear language in the proposal as presented. Many speaking before the Commission were critical of the ordinance – saying it would be criminalizing homelessness in Marquette. The motion to postpone the vote to give city staff time to redraft the ordinance for clarity will allow the Commission to pick up the issue at their next meeting on May 27th.
