Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Digging out and cleaning up after yesterday’s record blizzard is continuing this morning around the central U.P. Crews are keeping the main highway corridors open and getting side roads and streets cleared as soon as they can. Schools are closed all around Upper Michigan this morning, and that includes Northern Michigan University in Marquette. They will make a decision about evening classes by 2pm today. Also closed today is Finlandia University in Hancock and Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College in Baraga County.
The high winds have subsided somewhat across the region, after gusts we’re recorded over 50mph in many areas yesterday. Some areas are still being reported as being difficult for travel, and at last report, M-28 between Chocolay Township and Munising is closed. Widespread blowing snow will lead to whiteouts in areas along the Lake Superior shoreline through the early morning. Roads in open areas will be deeply drifted and some will be impassable. Also, in the eastern U.P., M-117 is closed in Between US-2 and M-28 and US-2 is reported closed in Mackinac County between Worth Road and I-75. The Mackinac Bridge, however, which was closed for several hours yesterday due to high winds and falling ice, is open again this morning.
Several community service agencies, government and medical care offices are closed or opening late this morning, so you are encouraged to call ahead of you have any appointments to see if they are still on.
