Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Sub-zero temperatures and brutally cold wind chills have basically closed down the U.P. and the rest of the state.  Wind chills of 30 to 40 below zero are being reported around the region this morning.  Those temperatures, combined with snow storms in many areas, have resulted in all area schools being closed today.

This includes Northern Michigan University in Marquette, Michigan Tech in Houghton, Finlandia University in Hancock, Bay College’s Iron Mountain and Escanaba campuses, the Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College in Baraga County and many others.

A Blizzard Warning remains in effect for Alger and northern Schoolcraft Counties until tomorrow morning, while Winter Storm and Wind Chill Warnings are posted for much of the remaining U.P.  At last report, M-28 between Kawbawgam Road in Marquette County and M-94 in Alger County is closed to traffic due to whiteout conditions.

The U.S. Postal Service is suspending mail delivery throughout the entire state of today because of the brutally cold temperatures. It’s also suspending deliveries in other states affected by the cold, including Wisconsin, Illinois, Ohio, and Pennsylvania.  Services should be back up and running tomorrow.

With the brutally cold wind chills expected in many parts of the state, it has prompted Governor Gretchen Whitmer to close state offices once again today.  This includes all Secretary of State locations.  All state employees with shifts that begin after 10 last night and are deemed nonessential should not report to work.
