Opening May 24, 2018 in Marquette, we gathered in the supercenter’s parking lot this morning to witness the donation. The vehicles – valued at an estimated $100,000 – had previously been part of the Meijer fleet and were recently replaced with ones that offer the latest technology in emissions control. The vehicles have been reconditioned and prepped for their next use with the brand new NMU CDL Truck Driving Program.
Marquette Meijer Store Director John Spaulding started off by introducing all of figureheads present and welcoming the audience to Meijer. Operating 235 supercenters and grocery stores throughout the Midwest, Meijer is a company that strives to give back to the local communities starting with their very first store in Grand Rapids, Michigan. Spaulding stated, “We look forward to opening our Marquette store next month, and being part of this strong community for years to come.”

Spaulding then introduced Northern Michigan University President, Fritz Erickson. “This is an extraordinary gift that will help us launch an educational program to meet high industry demand,” NMU President Fritz Erickson said. “We thank Meijer for this investment, and for its faith in Northern to train the highest-quality CDL drivers for Meijer and other companies throughout the region.”
When finished, the store will offer a variety of departments to shop in including a fresh produce department, deli department, home goods & lifestyle, entertainment, a pharmacy, apparel, a garden center, and so much more. The store will also be open 24 hours a day and include a Starbucks Coffee!
