Marquette, MIMarch 5, 2025 – Heavy snow and blizzard conditions expected across the north-central U.P. today. The National Weather Service in Negaunee Township says a Blizzard Warning is posted for the region from 7:00am today until 1:00am tomorrow.

Snow accumulations of between 8 and 12 inches along the Lake Superior shoreline to up to 20 inches possible in the higher terrain of the Huron Mountains and the Michigamme Highlands. Winds will be gusting as high as 40 mph with gusts to 50 mph near the Lake Superior shoreline.

Officials say travel could be very difficult to impossible at times today with blowing snow reducing visibility. The strong winds and weight of snow on tree branches and power lines and could also cause sporadic power outages.

As a result, all schools in Marquette, Alger, Baraga, Houghton and Keweenaw counties are closed today. That includes Northern Michigan University in Marquette Gogebic Community College campuses in Houghton and Ironwood and the Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College in L’Anse.  Bay College has also closed their Iron Mountain campus.

Several area municipalities have also announced their offices will be closed today and community centers and programs are canceled. That includes the Meals on Wheels program by Community Action Alger-Marquette. Marq-Tran has also announced that they will not be running regular bus routes today. They will be providing medical transportation services only.

Some area churches have also announced the cancellation of their Ash Wednesday services today as well, so it is best to try to call ahead or check social media if you have an appointment or event scheduled for today.
