Marquette, MI – February 23, 2023 – Heavy snow is continuing across west and central Upper Michigan this morning. The National Weather Service in Negaunee Township says gusty northeast winds are also creating blowing and drifting snow, and a Winter Storm Warning is posted for Marquette and Alger counties through 1:00am tomorrow.
A widespread total snowfall of 3-11 inches is expected with locally higher amounts possible, especially in the higher terrain of north central UP. Snow will then transition to lake effect snow, adding another few inches of accumulation by Friday morning along Lake Superior.
Travel will be difficult to near impossible at times today as roads become snow covered and blustery winds cause blowing and drifting snow.
Multiple school districts across Upper Michigan are closed today, including all Marquette and Alger County schools. That includes Redeemer Lutheran Preschool in Marquette and Munising Baptist School in Munising.
Also closed today is Northern Michigan University. Bay College has also closed their Main and West campuses, The Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College in L’Anse is closed as is Finlandia University in Hancock.
