Marquette, MI May 6, 2022The City of Negaunee has announced a series of projects and initiatives that are happening over the next several months.

City Manager Nate Heffron spoke about them today with Mark & Walt in the Morning.

Heffron said two of the projects involve feedback from the public, with the first calling on public review of a draft of the 5-year Recreation Plan for the city.

It includes proposed enhancement projects at Teal Lake, development of trails between Negaunee and neighboring communities, and the creation of camping facilities. The draft is available online at the City’s website at cityofnegaunee.com.

Heffron added that the Negaunee Downtown Development Authority is holding a public meeting later this month to hear from businesses and the public about the creation of a downtown Social District to allow for outdoor alcohol consumption in certain areas.

The meeting is on May 16th, at 5:30 PM, at the Negaunee Ice Arena.  Information on the proposed plan can be found online at negauneedda.com.

He also talked about a major water system upgrade. Phase 1 of the USDA Water Project includes new sidewalk installation, new water mains, and the paving of several streets in the city.

The two-year project will replace 12,000 feet of water mains and pave over 2-miles of streets.

Heffron wrapped up with an update on a project to pave approximately 70% of the alleyways within the city. Work will begin later this month on alleys chosen by the city based on whether any scheduled utility repairs or projects would take place within the next 20 years.

Work is expected to run from the last week in May through late June.
