Record water level lows for Lake Michigan and Lake HuronMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reporting record low water levels in Lake Michigan and Lake Huron.

The results from tests conducted through January 31, found the levels at their lowest since records began in 1918. Officials pegged the monthly mean water level at 576.02 feet above sea level. The previous low was recorded in March of 1964.

Officials say years of drought-like conditions are largely to blame for the problem. Snow and ice levels from Lake Superior are being monitored to help determine if the lake levels will rise this spring.

Water levels on Lakes Erie and Ontario remain below average but not at record levels.
