Flu preventionMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)State Community Health officials say two children have died from an early outbreak of the flu in Michigan already this year, and influenza cases are growing rapidly.

Angela Minicuci, of the Michigan Department of Community Health, says as of December 20there have been 149 confirmed cases of the  flu in Michigan, which is up from 63 the week before.  She says there have also been two pediatric deaths from influenza, which is semi-unusal for this early in the season, but more importantly is that there are many more unreported flu cases all over the state.

One of the pediatric deaths was an infant and the other a teenager.

Minicuci reminds residents that the best prevention against the flu is a shot, and for everyone to get vaccinated, since it has worked to combat the three most common strains of influenza present this year.
