MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)Officials at Northern Michigan University in Marquette say the investigation into the death of a freshman athlete is continuing.

18-year-old Arianna Alioto of Columbia, Missouri, a redshirt member of the NMU Soccer Team, died Friday evening after apparently drowning at the pool in the Physical Educational Instructional Facility in the NMU Sports Complex on campus.  The incident occurred after the team had been conducting a group workout in the pool.

According to NMU director of Public Safety, Mike Bath, Alioto was spotted in the pool around 5:35 p.m. Friday by someone working out in the facility.  She was pulled from the water and was unresponsive.  9-1-1 was called and C-P-R was attempted.

EMS arriving on the scene took the case over and transported her to Marquette General Hospital where she was pronounced dead.  An autopsy is being conducted today to determine the cause of death, but results are not expected for 2 to 4 weeks.

Up to 20 team members and staff are currently being interviewed to determine the timeline of events in the incident.  NMU officials say Alioto had no record of any previous medical conditions, nor were there any signs of trauma.

A lifeguard was on duty at the pool when the incident occurred.
