MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The owner of a former iron mine in the central Upper Peninsula says it’s planning to clean up the site and could use it to produce aggregate products such as stone, sand and gravel.

The Groveland Iron Ore Mine in Dickinson County once produced 2 million tons of pellets a year and employed 500 workers.  The mine started as an underground mine in the 1800s and was converted to an open pit mine in the 1940s and 1950s. It closed in 1981.

The Detroit Free Press reports that president of Michigan Mining LLC Rocky Bullard III, which has owned the property since 2000, said the company’s plans likely would be expensive but would create jobs.
