BOARD MEETING SUMMARY

AUGUST 4, 2020

Superintendent Petrovich updated the Board on various topics including: the proposed Return to Learn preparedness plan; recent professional development activities for teachers; budget updates and the restoration of the second 5th grade class at KI Sawyer Elementary School for the upcoming school year. The Board also heard an update on the status of fall athletics.

The Board took action on the following:

  • Approved the monthly check register in the amount of $552,326.05.

    • Approved the Return to Learn preparedness plan.

    • Approved the following appointments for the 2020-21 school year:

  1. Equal Opportunity Compliance Officer – Superintendent of Schools

  2. Civil Rights Compliance Officer – Middle/High School Principal

  3. Section 503 and 504, Rehabilitation Act of 1973, Compliance Officer – Special Education Coordinator

  4. ADA, Right to Know, Asbestos Compliance, Blood Borne Pathogens Officer – Supervisor of Operations

  5. Liaison for Homeless Children and Youth – Elementary Lead Teacher

  6. Investment Officer – Business Manager

    • Approved the following bids:

  1. Dairy Products – Jilbert’s Dairy

  2. Bakery Products – Aunt Millie’s Bakery

  3. Propane – Ferrell Gas

  • Approved a complete list of classes offered for credit for the purpose of receiving state aid.

  • Increased the paid lunch price at GMS/GHS to $2.85 in compliance with the Federal paid lunch equity standards.

  • Approved the employment of the following personnel:

        1. Katherine Wilkinson – special education teacher, Gilbert Elementary School/Gwinn Middle/High School, effective date of hire – 1st day of the 2020-21 contract year

  • Accepted the resignation of the following personnel:

        1. Bill Hill – 8th grade girls basketball coach, Gwinn Middle/High School, effective date of resignation – July 28, 2020

  • Approved a contract with Marquette County as the District’s School Inspection Authority.

Public Comment:

  1. Shirley Kriegel – hoped that the District will grant our teachers the ability to teach in an online only format should they so choose

  2. Deb Goldsworthy – thanked Superintendent Petrovich for clarifying that the teachers are in favor of all staff and students wearing masks

  3. Sarah Briggs – thanked Superintendent Petrovich for clarifying that the teachers are in favor of all staff and students wearing masks

  4. Kristen LaRock – thanked Coach Bill Hill for his commitment and knowledge he has given to the girls basketball program and stated that he will be greatly missed

Board Member Comments:

  1. TJ Derwin – thanked everyone involved in the Return to Learn plan for their hard work

  2. Ashley Jenema – thanked the group who worked on the Return to Learn plan and thanked Ian McLeod for his expertise in continuing to keep our technology systems working smoothly

  3. John Waldo – commented on the work that went into the Return to Learn plan, congratulated Coach Hill on his retirement from coaching and commended the Board for always coming together for common good even when we may have differing opinions

  4. Brad Johnson – welcomed Ms. Wilkinson to the district and thanked the committee who worked on the Return to Learn plan

  5. Dawn Andrews – thanked the community for being patient as the Return to Learn plan was developed, noting that in this uncertain time we expect some hiccups along the way and congratulated Coach Hill on his retirement from coaching

The Board then adjourned to Executive Session to discuss the Superintendent’s Contract.

Upon return from Executive Session, the Board took action on the following:

              • Approved the Superintendent’s contract by another year (through June 30, 2021).

SPECIAL BOARD MEETING SUMMARY

AUGUST 13, 2020

The Board took action on the following:

              • Approved the blended learning instructional plan for Fall 2020.

              • Accepted, with regret, the following resignation:

    1. Judy Girard – 2nd grade teacher, Gilbert Elementary School, effective date of resignation – August 6, 2020

Board Member Comments:

The Board collectively commended the staff for their work in developing the blended learning instructional plan for the fall, noting that this is yet another example of the top notch staff we have who are always putting the needs of our students at the forefront.
