Marquette, MI August 5, 2020 – In the Democratic primary in the 1st Congressional District, Dana Ferguson was the winner over Linda O’Dell. With just under 100% of precincts reporting, Ferguson had 44,756 votes to O’Dell’s 24,872. Ferguson now moves on to take on Republican incumbent Jack Bergman in the November general election.

In the Republican primary for the 109th District State House seat, Melody Wagner was the winner with 3,278 votes over Matt Goss with 3,004. Wagner will face Democrat incumbent Sara Cambensy in November. In the Democratic primary in the western U.P. to select the challenger to Republican incumbent Greg Markkanen in the 110th House District, Janet Metsa was the winner over Lawrence Dale and Casey VerBerkmoes.

In the eastern U.P., in the 107th District State House Race, Republican John Damoose will face off against Democrat Jim Page in November. Damoose and and Page won their respective primaries to run for the seat being vacated by current State House Speaker Lee Chatfield, who is term-limited out. Damoose had 7,968 votes on the Republican side while Page won the democratic primary with 4,909 votes.

In the Marquette County Commission 2nd District election, Joe DeRocha had 1,436 votes to Sterling Schultz with 751. In the Marquette Township Supervisor election, Lyn Durant was the top vote-getter with 501 over David Wiegand with 246. In the Marquette Township Trustee election, Linda Winslow finished with 619 votes to 331 for John Markes.

In the Marquette County Mine Inspector race, Steven Bertucci finished in first with 3,854 votes. Allan Koski had 3,537 and John Hamel, Jr. had 3,130, and in the run for Marquette County Drain Commissioner, Mike Farrell had 5,540 to Paul Altobello’s 4,629.

Taking a look at some of the millage and bond proposals in Marquette County, the Marquette County Transit Authority, MARQ-TRAN, Millage Renewal Request was passed by voters with 10,905 YES votes to 3,141 NO. In the City of Marquette, the Senior Services Millage Renewal passed by a vote of 3,683 YES to 316 NO.

Elsewhere, the Negaunee Public Schools Bond Proposal was approved by a count of 1,662 YES to 876 NO.

Voters in Skandia Township approved both the Library Millage Renewal and the Township Road Millage Renewal, and the Tilden Township Road Millage Renewal was also passed. In Sands Township, the Operating Millage Renewal and Library Millage Renewal were approved, and in Powell Township, the Operating Millage Renewal request was passed.
