Negaunee jumped out to an early lead with a score of 10-3 with just over four minutes left in the first quarter. The Miners continued to play well in the first quarter, advancing their lead to 16-7 at the end of the first.
The Negaunee Miners started the second quarter off with the ball, and they looked to keep up the scoring of the first quarter. Aleda Johnson drained a three-pointer early in the quarter to extend the Miners lead over the Emeralds. The Manistique Emeralds did their best to make a comeback, but the Miners’ tough defense held the Emeralds’ scoring to a minimum. Fouls, however, seemed to be the main problem for Manistique, allowing the Miners extend their lead. Negaunee also had their own foul troubles, with more than one player coming close to foul trouble before the end of the first half. Abby Nelson had a nice lay-up through the tough Manistique defense to extend Negaunee’s lead to 31-11 with just over one minute left in the first half.
