Negaunee Miners Basketball Beat Marquette Boys In Overtime Match 78-67

Negaunee, MiFebruary 16th, 2023– The Negaunee Miner Varsity Boys fought hard against Marquette Thursday night in the Miners hometown. Carl Leander Johnson was on the scene for Sunny 101.9

The first quarter started out with a bucket from Mason Sager of Negaunee, scoring a two pointer. Justin Jurmu scored a three pointer in retaliation for Marquette. Jurmu scored a point at the free throw line shortly after. Sager scored two at the free throw line as well as a three pointer, retaking the lead before Jurmu combated with another three pointer. The student sectioned roared as the clock ticked. Ty Jacobson made himself known to the crowd for the night with a three pointer. Mason Sager was sent to the free throw line again after MacPhee scored a body foul, and scored twice. Mason Sager scored yet another bucket as well, bringing the Miners to a lead of three. MacPhee scored a three, avenging Marquette before Peters scored for his first time of the match. Downey scored shortly after as well, putting them one behind Marquette. Sager stole the lead shortly after, ending off the quarter with a one point lead for the Miners. 19-18

Gavin Saunders started off the quarter with a two pointer. MacPhee brought the Miners back within one. After some combat from Marquette and fast action from Gavin Downey, Peters scored shortly after bringing the Miners back to a lead of one. Marquette scored again before Sager scored off of a floater, stealing the lead once again. Guinette scored two free throws, furthering the Miners lead. Guinette scored again, before Marquette earned yet another foul. The Miners were already in double time before the quarter finished. 33-28

Sager started off the quarter with a two pointer, bringing Negaunee to a lead of seven. Jurmu of Marquette scored a three pointer shortly after. He was sent to the free throw line after, but didn’t score. Sager scored off of a layup, bringing the Miners up to a lead of seven. Marquette pulled them down to five yet again, before Saunders brought them back up to seven. Saunders scored yet again bringing the Miners to a score of forty-two. Sager pulled down a bucket as well after some contest. Jurmu pulled a three pointer down shortly after. Jordan Guinette and Mason Sager brought the Miners back to a lead of seven. Wyatt Lakenen of Marquette combated Negaunee with a three pointer. Sager widened the lead yet again with a floater, ending off the quarter. After Closner of Marquette reached his fourth foul, MacPhee scored once from the free throw line. 47-42

The fourth quarter started off with Mason Sager who scored a three pointer. Macphee closed the gap to four shortly after. The Miners climbed back up to six thanks to Gavin Saunders. Marquette closed the gap down to two in retaliation. Jack Quinell scored twice at the free throw line shortly after, tying the teams up. The student section shouted over Carl Leander Johnson. Marquette scored two more times at the free throw line, taking the lead.Shortly after, Sager sank two buckets at the free throw line, tying the game yet again. Negaunee took a three point lead, thanks to Mason Sager, causing the student section to erupt. Jurmu scored a two pointer shortly after cutting the Miners lead within a point. Jurmu stole the lead for Marquette bringing them to a lead one. Matthew Peters pulled down his fourth offensive rebound of the match in retaliation. Guinette tied the game at fifty-eight points from the free throw line. Closner stole the lead by two points. Mason Sager was sent to the free throw line, and tied the game yet again at sixty points before a timeout. The game resumed with less than two minutes left. Jurmu stole the lead with a three pointer, retaking the lead for Marquette. Ty Jacobson fouled out of the match. Peter Closner was sent to the free throw line for two, but missed twice. A timeout was called by Brad Nelson immediately after. Sager tied the game at sixty-three with fifteen seconds left on the clock. A timeout was called once again by Marquette. 63-63

The game went into overtime, and Guinette scored twice at the free throw line. Jurmu scored a three pointer shortly after. Negaunee retook the lead shortly after before Jurmu retook the lead for Marquette. Mason Sager scored yet another three pointer, bringing the Miners to a score of seventy-one. Guinette laid in a three pointer as well, bringing the Miners to a six point lead. Mason was sent to the free throw line for a pair, and scored twice. Carl Leander Johnson says it’s his best game of the year. Sager brought Negaunee to a lead of ten shortly after. Sager sank another free throw, Marquette checked out their starters in retaliation. 78-67
