Negaunee Miner Boys Beat Westwood Patriots 50-47


Negaunee, MiJanuary 20th, 2023 The Negaunee Miner Boys battled hard in the second game of a double header against the Westwood Patriots Friday night. Carl Leander Johnson was on the scene for Sunny 101.9

The Negaunee boys started off the first quarter with a two point basket. Sanders went up for a three and got fouled on the shot taking him to the free throw line. Westwood got themselves on the board right after. The Miners got themselves one more basket before the end of the quarter. A slow scoring game for both teams making for an uneventful first quarter. 8-7

The second quarter started off with a basket from the Patriots, putting them on top. The Miners hit a three go steal back their lead. Gavin Downey got a big rebound and put back to continue fighting for the lead. Another Rebound from Gavin to help Negaunee gain two more points. The Miners sunk two free throws to push the lead. Gauthier had great defense and helped get his team back on offense and gain two points. A behind the back pass from Mason Sager got Downey two points. Saunders with another two point basket at the end of the quarter. Negaunee ended the quarter with a 5 point lead. 23-18

Jacobson got he second half stated with two points for Negaunee. Miners came out in a zone defense and forced a turnover. They took advantage of the turnover and got another two points from Jacobson. Westwood continued to fight and got a basket to bring the lead down to five. Negaunee sent Westwood to the free throw line for a three point play making it a two point game. Gauthier with another basket for the Miners. Gauthier took control of the game and got two more points. Westwood refused to buckle under the Miner pressure and got themselves two more points. The Miners dominated the out of bounds plays and got another basket. Evan Gauthier couldn’t be stopped and got another great basket to end off the quarter. A great effort by both teams in the third quarter that kept the game interesting.35-33

Gavin Saunders got sent to the free throw line to start off the quarter, scoring with both shots. Saunders scored another two pointer shortly after. The Patriots scored a three pointer right after a timeout. Westwood scored again making it a one point game. A another three from the Patriots making the Miners down by two. Negaunee stopped Westwood’s scoring streak and tied up the game. The Miners went on the attack and hit two free throws to tie it back up. Gavin Saunders got a steal, took it down the court and got fouled. He sunk both free throws and got back the lead. Sager made a three point play making the student section go wild. With thirty seconds left Gavin Saunders got to the free throw line gaining one point. Quickly after Saunders was sent back to the line and hit one again. The Miners finished off an absolutely insane game with a three point lead. 50-47
