Marquette, MI – December 27, 2019 – I am, and if you know me this is not a surprise, a huge nerd. I am especially fond of certain Sci-Fi franchises, notably Star Trek, Doctor Who, and, of course, Star Wars. I went to see Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker the day after it came out, and rather than immediately posting about the experience, I decided to give my thoughts time to fully form before I expressed them. Here they are.
First, I want to say that this will be somewhat spoiler-free, meaning no plot points will be revealed, but I will be expressing my general opinion on the film, so if you haven’t seen it and want to go in completely blind, skip this post until you’ve seen the film.
As for my reaction to the movie, it wasn’t exactly what I was hoping for. Initially I was very disappointed, and as we walked out of the theater I told my brother and my dad exactly why. There were some hokey moments, some things pertaining to the force that I felt were created specifically for this film, one moment at the end that feels completely out of left field, and far too many cutesy-little creatures and droids that served no purpose other than to elicit a quick laugh or a feeling of puppy-like sympathy from the audience. There were more than a few scenes at which I rolled my eyes. Hard.
All that said, given a week or so to process things, it isn’t as bad as I first thought. Granted, it could have been better (quite a bit in my opinion), but it serves as an adequate wrap-up of the main saga. I’m feeling a bit bittersweet about this one, because the saga is now complete, which means no more main line Star Wars movies. Only one thing to do now.
On to The Mandalorian!
