Marquette, MiDecember 13 – Why is ANYONE offended by another’s belief?

Today’s headlines had one woman so upset it took her almost an hour to call in to say how angry she was… Made my heart grow 3 sizes!

Freedom FROM Religion vs. Freedom OF Religion

An interview with Dan Barker from the Freedom From Religion Foundation seemed to show much agreement (I’m not sure why).  We agreed that permitting a group to have a nativity scene (or any other religious item) on public grounds is OK.   That surprised me so much I asked the question too many times!  If what Mr Barker said truly reflects their views… we agree on a lot.  Simply stated – EVERY faith (and non-faith) has the right to be seen and heard – in ALL public forums.  That seems to contradict some items on the FFRF web site – and many people’s perception of the group… that they believe faith should NOT be on display except on private property.  Several times Mr Barker agreed that it is appropriate to have displays -even on government property, as long as it is a designated place for such things.  A pleasant surprise – if accurate.

A Supporting View from Fr. Frank Lenz

The best quote from Fr. Frank is “We don’t have a right to ‘not be offended'”.  This country was based on the concept that ALL religions (and non-religions) hold an equal place.  It was to guarantee No faith would be considered second-rate and to guarantee the FREEDOM to practice.

The first amendment does not create a ban on public faith displays… it promotes the free public expression of ALL faiths.. a big difference!
