    Marquette – The National Weather Service in Marquette, in conjunction with the Marquette Water Safety Task Force, the YMCA, Northern Michigan University and Michigan Sea Grant will sponsor a water safety and recreation expo on Friday, July 22 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday on the beach at McCarty’s Cove in Marquette.

    The National Weather Service and Michigan Sea Grant will provide information on Great Lakes rip current and channel current history, the science behind rip currents and channel currents, and available forecasts to advise people of rip current risks and dangerous lake conditions.

    The Marquette Water Safety Task Force will discuss the changes to the Marquette city beaches for this summer as well as the rescue equipment found in the rescue boxes at the beaches.

    Along with the YMCA and NMU, the task force will demonstrate how to rescue someone from a current using the equipment. Visitors to the displays will be encouraged to try their hand at rescuing others by using the equipment.

    The YMCA will offer brief training on kayaking and various paddle sports and have information on swimming lessons and other classes available at the Y.
