Ishpeming – The Cliffs Shaft Mine Museum, 501 W. Euclid Street, Ishpeming, will open for the season on Tuesday, June 14. The museum is open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
A new display on the Mather B Mine will be highlighted, along with the lumber, railroad and mining displays from the 1800s to the present, on display in the historical dry building as well as outside. Also featured will be local historical artifacts representing the local community during the great mining era and the Ishpeming Rock and Mineral Club Room with displays of 700 minerals from the Upper Peninsula, Midwest and the world.
Guided tours of the tunnels that the miners walked to the base of the C-Shaft will be offered, along with a history of mining from those who worked the mines. Also on display are old underground iron ore cars, a blacksmith shop, and a 170-ton iron ore truck with 12-foot tires.
