Great Lakes Radio Marquette - Upper Peninsula News

Nearly an inch of rain fell Saturday in the eastern Upper Peninsula, leading to improved conditions at the Duck Lake Fire in Luce County.  The Department of Natural Resources Sunday reported the fire is now 72 percent contained.  Fireline supervisors worked on Saturday to identify access points and plan for the completion of the remaining uncontained sections of the fire line.  Fire crews continued to monitor the lightning fire south of Bodi Lake, and saw crews made significant progress removing hazard trees. There are 141 properties within the perimeter of the fire, and a total of 136 structures lost.

A public meeting is set for tonight in Marquette to discuss a plan to restore a portion of Lake Superior shoreline next to Lakeshore Boulevard.  The City of Marquette and the Superior Watershed Partnership are in the first phase of the project which seeks to restore a 3,000-foot section of shoreline currently heavily reinforced with a tall ridge of scrap rock that obscures the view of the lake.  Several public meetings are set for this year to gather input regarding the restoration project and its design.  This phase is funded by a $58,000 grant from the Michigan Coastal Management Program and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for planning and design.  Tonight’s public meeting is at 6:30 p.m. at the Citizens Forum at Lakeview Arena.

The upper level of the Bluff Street Parking Ramp in the City of Marquette will be closed down today.  The closure is being done to allow for completion work from last fall’s $1.1 million renovation project.  The ramp is estimated to re-open by Monday, June 18th.  City Officials say the completion time will be determined by cooperative weather and curing time of products being applied to the surfaces of the parking area.  For questions on the closure, contact the Marquette Downtown Development Authority.

Starting today Forest Park Drive from Grove Street to Westland Drive will be closed to allow for the reconstruction of the street and underground utilities.  This is the first phase of this three phase project.  This phase is scheduled to be substantially complete by the end of June.  A detour route will be set up by means of Grove Street, McClellan Avenue, and Wilson Street.

Two Upper Michigan agencies are receiving a portion of over 3 million dollars in grand funding that will enable AmeriCorps volunteers to help mentor disadvantaged students.  The Marquette-Alger Educational Service Agency in Marquette will receive $149,857 in funding for 12 AmeriCorps volunteers to provide tutoring and reading instruction for students in grades K-10 in Marquette and Alger counties.  The B-H-K Child Development Board in Houghton will receive $586,500 in funding for 46 AmeriCorps volunteers to provide academic support to disadvantaged students and their families throughout the Upper Peninsula.  The grants are from AmeriCorps and are funded through the Michigan Community Service Commission.
