Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Marquette City Police are warning residents of a phone scam in the area.

Police say the scam involves altered caller ID information, also known as caller ID “spoofing”.

Residents say they received calls that read “Marquette Police Department” with the department’s phone number on the caller ID.

The caller then says the department is investigating a report of identity theft and they request personal information.

The caller is said to have a foreign accent.

Police say you should not give out any personal information if you receive such a call and to simply hang up.
