Chocolay Township Police responded to a rollover accident yesterday afternoon involving an SUV and a street sweeping vehicle. The accident happened just before 12-30 yesterday on US-41/M-28 near the Rock Cut in Harvey when a northbound SUV driven by 21-year-old Kristina Brinich of AuTrain went out of control, rolled over and struck the street sweeper. The driver of the street sweeper sustained some minor injuries while Brinich sought her own treatment at Marquette General Hospital. Brinich was later ticketed for driving too fast for conditions.

Marquette City Police report a two-vehicle accident yesterday that injured one person. The accident happened just after 2-pm at the intersection of 5-th and Michigan when a vehicle failed to yield to oncoming traffic and crashed into the other vehicle. Police say a passenger in one of the vehicles was taken to Marquette General for treatment. No names have been released and no word on the condition of the injured person.

M-DOT and the Ontonagon County Road Commission completed emergency repair of M-64 north of Bergland yesterday and the highway was reopened. Motorists should use caution in the area, however, as the repaired portion of the roadway has a temporary gravel surface. The roadway will be paved as soon as asphalt is available for the season. M-DOT closed the highway to through traffic Monday afternoon between Bergland and Silver City in Ontonagon County as the roadway was compromised by rising water. A beaver dam blocked a culvert beneath the highway, and a portion of the roadway was washed out before the blockage could be removed.

The Department of Natural Resources says temporary drawdown of Lake LeVasseur in Marquette County to begin in May. The Lake LeVasseur State Wildlife Management Area will undergo water level drawdown over the summer months to allow for habitat management. The drawdown will result in low water levels in portions of the management areas, but the main channel will remain accessible for canoe and kayak use. Lake LeVasseur is a managed marsh complex, created in 1953 with placement of a dam on LeVasseur Creek. The area is maintained by the D-N-R’s Wildlife Division and is designed to create unique marshland habitat. Periodic drawdowns of water levels are conducted at Lake LeVasseur to expedite habitat improvements.

The Marquette Police Department is giving city residents an opportunity to safely get rid of old, expired medications. The police Department, in cooperation with the Superior Watershed Partnership and the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, is hosting a free community medication drop-off. Residents will be able to bring their unwanted pharmaceuticals to the Marquette Police Department in Downtown Marquette on April 28th from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm.
