Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – More than 1.1 million Michiganians are on the road during this Memorial Day holiday, launching the start of the summer travel season.

Triple-A of Michigan says state travel numbers are up slightly over last year.

For Michigan Triple-A members four U.P. communities are in the top 5 most popular driving destinations in the state this year.

They are: Mackinac Island, Munising, Sault Ste. Marie and Marquette.

Susan Hiltz of Triple-A Michigan says lower gas prices than last year and an improving economy are factors as to why Memorial Day travel is at the highest levels in eight years.

Triple-A also estimates that 60-thousand people are traveling by air.
