Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – 109th District State Representative John Kivela says the energy plan passed last week in Lansing came up short.

The Marquette Democrat voted against the plan because it did not offer a solution to guarantee reliable and affordable power for the U.P. and Northern Lower Peninsula.

Kivela said he worked with 108th District State Rep. Ed McBroom on an amendment to create a path to a possible electric connection between Michigan’s peninsulas.

The amendment would have allowed the U.P. to no longer be dependent on Wisconsin for electricity, but it ultimately failed.

Kivela says he hopes the incoming legislature will hold more conversations about both the short and long-term energy needs of the U.P.
