Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality is receiving a federal grant to help continue the cleanup of the Manistique River.

The nearly 3-point-9 million dollar grant will help the DEQ develop and implement measures to remediate PCB contamination in sediment from industrial waste in the watershed.

When completed, the project is expected to significantly reduce the PCB levels in the Manistique River channel and harbor.

Officials say with successful remediation, dredging restrictions will be removed and fish PCB concentrations will return to safe levels.
