Lansing, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Legislation authored in part by an Upper Michigan lawmaker to make state departments more accountable has been approved in the state Senate.

Senator Tom Casperson says the bills would require most state government departments to pay the court costs of winning parties when they win in court against the department.

The Escanaba Republican says the legislation aims to have departments work with residents and businesses on disagreements instead of unnecessarily pushing them into court.

If the department loses in court, they will be held accountable unless they prove that their position was substantially justifiable.

The bills now go to the state House for consideration.
