Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Michigan’s Senior U.S. Senator has responded to accusations from a conservative political watchdog group that he was involved in the Internal Revenue Service targeting of conservative groups.

The group Judicial Watch showed that Democratic Senator Carl Levin pressured the IRS to target the conservative groups for additional scrutiny.

Judicial Watch claimed that the senator wrote a series of letters to the IRS demanding the agency probe the political activity of several conservative non-profits.

According to a statement from the senator’s office, Levin’s  correspondence with the IRS was no secret, with much of it entered into the Congressional Record and posted on his website.

He listed both liberal and conservative groups appearing to violate the legal prohibition on campaigning by nonprofits.

In addition, the statement said Levin believes any group, conservative or liberal, should not abuse its tax-exempt status by using a taxpayer subsidy to buy campaign ads.
