Bay Mills, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A downstate man died in a snowmobiling accident yesterday in the eastern U.P.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s Office says 61-year-old Louis Charles Monaweck of Battle Creek died from injuries in the crash just before 5:00 p.m. on Plantation Road near Bay Mills.

Reports say a group of snowmobilers were eastbound in a single-file line along the right-hand side of the road except for Monaweck, who was traveling in the oncoming lane as the group crested a hill.

The group met a westbound pickup as they came over the hill.

Police say the driver of the pickup tried to avoid the group, and Monaweck swerved to miss the truck and hit a snowbank.

He was thrown from the sled and was run over by the pickup.

Officials say there was no evidence of any wrongdoing on the part of the pickup driver.
