    Munising, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Alger County Sheriff Robert Hughes has announced that he is stepping down at the end of this year.

    Hughes announced his retirement yesterday.

    He started his career with the Alger County Sheriff’s Office in 1978, and was promoted to Sheriff in 2010.

    Hughes says he is anxious to assist in the first major renovations to the Alger County Jail during the remainder of his term.

    The current jail is a 24 bed facility built in 1964 and the project will add another 22 beds.

    Hughes’ last day as Sheriff will be December 31st.
