Great Lakes Radio News UpdateMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News)Legislation has been introduced in Lansing that could require welfare applicants and recipients to pass drug tests before they could obtain benefits.
The state House Families, Children and Seniors committee on Wednesday discussed the Republican-sponsored bill to establish a “suspicion-based” substance abuse screen and testing for those 18 or older.
Those who test positive could reapply for benefits after six months, or enroll in a substance abuse program. The recipient could not receive benefits while in a treatment program, but could retake a drug test in three months. A negative test result would mean resumption of benefits.
The bill is sponsored by House Republican Jeff Farrington of Utica.
