MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – State House Speaker Jase Bolger says his chamber will not pass legislation that would mandate a transvaginal ultrasound be performed on women seeking abortions.
The measure, introduced by House Republican Joel Johnson of downstate Clare, would require the ultrasound at least two hours before an abortion is performed using the most technologically advanced ultrasound equipment available at that location.
Some have interpreted the bill as requiring the ultrasound, but Johnson says that is not the measure’s intent and he is willing to amend the bill to clarify that. Bolger says while he wants to be sure women have access to the best technology available, he has absolutely no interest in forcing a woman to have a transvaginal ultrasound.
Supporters of abortion rights have denounced the bill.
