City of Lansing has signed land for casino over to Sault Ste. Marie tribeMARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The city of Lansing has signed over the land for a proposed $245 million casino to the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians.

The transfer of the $1.93 million parcel of land adjacent to the downtown Lansing Center was a mostly ceremonial, but necessary, step in the proposed Kewadin Lansing casino project.

The tribe will now apply to the U.S. Department of the Interior to take the land into trust as tribal lands in order to make the off-reservation casino legal. If approved, it would clear the way for construction of the 125,000-square-foot facility just a few blocks from the State Capitol.

Plans for the casino include up to 3,000 slot machines, 48 table games and assorted bars and restaurants.  The casino is opposed by Governor Rick Snyder, Attorney General Bill Schuette and other tribes in Michigan but tribal officials are confident their legal standing will hold up in court.
