MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Flu season is upon us.

The Michigan Department of Community Health has confirmed 12 cases of influenza, the first identified by the state laboratory during the 2012-2013 flu season in Michigan.

The illnesses occurred in both children and adults in lower Michigan. At least two people were known to have been hospitalized. Nine cases have been confirmed as influenza B viruses, two as influenza A (H3N2) virus, and one as influenza A (H1N1) 2009 virus.

Health officials say while influenza A and B viruses have now been confirmed in Michigan, it’s too early to tell what influenza viruses will circulate during this influenza season or how severe the influenza season may be.
