Squirrel Causes Power Outage in Marquette County

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – The Upper Peninsula Power Company says a mechanical failure caused a large power outage to occur in Marquette County overnight.

The failure happened around 3:00 a.m. at the Barnum Substation in Ishpeming. According to a press release from UPPCO, a squirrel made contact with the components within the substation which lead to the system failure.

The incident led to 7,800 UPPCO customers in the city of Ishpeming and surrounding area to be without electricity for about an hour.
