U.P. State Police Post Commander In Court On DUI Charge

MARQUETTE, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) –  A Michigan State Police post commander in the Upper Peninsula has waived his arraignment on a drunk driving charge.  Lt. William Smith of the Gladstone Post was arrested on July 7th for operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated.

The charge is a 93-day misdemeanor with a maximum fine of $500.  According to the Chippewa County Sheriff’s Department, Smith was driving alone in a personal vehicle when it ended up in a ditch in Sault Ste. Marie. He was not injured.

Smith was assigned to command the Gladstone post on April 1st.

Prosecutor Brian Peppler is requesting that Attorney General Bill Schuette appoint another prosecutor to handle the case since he worked with Smith on numerous occasions.
