Houghton, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – 110th District State Representative Scott Dianda is praising a new partnership between Michigan Tech’s Great Lakes Research Center and Enbridge to monitor the Straits of Mackinac.
The Calumet Democrat says the partnership will mean additional protection for the waterway that is key to Michigan’s economy.
Enbridge’s Pipeline 5 runs underneath the Straits and carries more than 500,000 barrels of oil and petroleum products each day.
That pipeline is more than 60 years old.
The research center will deploy a buoy this month to measure water temperature and flow, wind direction and speed and several other conditions to monitor all conditions in the area.
It will give Enbridge more information and data to help them keep Pipeline 5 operating safely.
The partnership was announced earlier this week at the Houghton school.
