Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball VS Gladstone Braves

NEGAUNEE, MI – In their season opener on Tuesday, the Negaunee Miners girls basketball team fell to Gladstone 43-30.  This Miners team, as second year coach Brandon Sager puts it, is a young team with a lot of potential.  It showed on Tuesday as the Miners rolled out a starting line-up consisting of three juniors, one sophomore, and a freshman point guard.  Though the Miners were missing their consensus best player Rosalie Anderson due to a sprained ankle, she is only one of two seniors on the entire roster.  However, the latter part of Coach Sager’s comments rang true as well:  This team shows signs of great potential this season.  Freshman point guard Aleda Johnson looks poised to be the Miners’ star as early as next year, and sophomore Courtney Finnala looks as though she is going to be a very important cog in coach Sager’s offensive attack.

The game started off well for the Miners as they led 8-5 early on and kept it even for much of the first half.  However, the youth of the Miners showed as the game progressed.  The second half turned into them playing catch-up with the Braves in the midst of turnovers, fatigue, and missed shots.  Adena Anderson, who is a co-captain along with her sister Roasalie, seemed to take her leadership roll seriously as she drained three triples to lead the Miners in scoring with nine points.  In the end, the shots just weren’t falling and the Miners lost their first game by 13 points.

The Lady Miners will make their home debut tonight against the Manistique Emeralds who also will be looking to get back to .500 following their heartbreaking defeat against Munising on Tuesday.  The Miners will be hoping to have senior Rosalie Anderson back for her senior year debut.  If the Miners can get her back, they’ll have a player who could potentially be a top-5 player in the MPC.

Be sure to tune into SunnyFM (101.9) or listen LIVE! on out website Sunny.FM.  My partner Jesse Anderson and myself will have the call.  Pre-game starts at 7pm and tip-off is at 7:30.  GO MINERS!
