10-11-2013 Negaunee, Michigan – It’s Football Night in Negaunee on Sunny.FM! This week the Negaunee Miners took on next door rivals, the Ishpeming Hematites in this highly anticipated game! Both teams entered into the game undefeated… but of course only one could finish the night with the title in tact! Read on for a recap of game highlights or listen to all the action in our Negaunee Miners football archives brought to you by Sunny.FM sports castor Carl Johnson.
It’s Football Night in Negaunee on Sunny.FM! The first quarter of the big high school football game between the Miners and the Hematites began with much excitement and cheering from the stands! The community really came out to support their teams and the stadium was packed. The Miners started the game with possession of the ball but ended their drive with a punt and no points. The Hematites got the ball and scored a touchdown on their first drive setting the score at 6-0 Ishpeming. This was Negaunee’s first time trailing all season and anticipation was high as fans waited to see how they would respond.

Negaunee Miners: 0
Ishpeming Hematites: 6
It’s Football Night in Negaunee on Sunny.FM! Negaunee started the second quarter of their high school varsity football game with the ball and lots of energy after Tyler LaJoie ran the ball 20 yards at the finish of the first quarter. Unfortunately they weren’t able get the ball into the end zone during their first run of the second quarter and Ishpeming took over and scored a touchdown by Alex Briones with a 2 point conversion by Adam Prisk. The Hematites marched the ball steadily down the field steadily each time it was in their hands. Negaunee wasn’t able to stop the Hematite gains and with no touchdowns of their own in the second quarter they ended the first half of the game with a score of 14-6 Ishpeming leading.
At the End of the Second Quarter:
Negaunee Miners: 6
Ishpeming Hematites: 14
Football Night in Negaunee on Sunny.FM! The Hematites controlled the game for the second and third quarters and the Negaunee defense was getting pushed around as Ishpeming scored again with a 2 point conversion and broadened the scoring gap 22-6. Negaunee fought back surprising the Hematites with a touchdown by Tyler Windhall but with no extra points and finished the third quarter trailing by 10 with a score of 22-12 Ishpeming.
At the End of the Third Quarter:
Negaunee Miners: 12
Ishpeming Hematites: 22
Football Night in Negaunee on Sunny.FM! There was lots of action in the fourth quarter of the game as Negaunee seemed to finally get their groove on in the final quarter! The Miners defense suffered a heartbreak early on as Ishpeming scored right away with a 45 yard touchdown by Alex Briones. Not to be defeated so easily, Negaunee’s Ryan Syrjala made a beautiful throw to Radloff who made a successful catch to complete the play. Syrjala followed up by running the ball in for a touchdown making the score 28-18 Ishpeming. Still trailing by 10 points the Miners were looking for a miracle and then, Ishpeming fumbled the ball and Negaunee took over with barely a minute left on the clock! An exciting breakthrough but even with another Negaunee touchdown in the last few seconds of the game it wasn’t enough to make a comeback good enough to win them the game. :( The final score was 28-24 Ishpeming.

Ishpeming Hematites: 28
Next week the Miners will face another tough adversary in the Marquette Redmen. The game on Friday, Oct. 18, 2013 will be on Negaunee’s home turf at Miner’s Field.
