UPDATE: January 29, 2019 –Negaunee, Michigan – #JohnsonStrong. It’s amazing seeing everyone come together after such a horrific tragedy recently took place within the hockey community in the U.P.
There are already so many fundraisers (see the Go Fund Me page links within this story) happening to benefit the Johnson family. Here are a couple:
FROM THE NEGAUNEE HIGH SCHOOL HOCKEY TEAM:
“The Negaunee High School Hockey Team would like to offer their sympathy and support to the Johnson Family who tragically lost two family members in an automobile accident as they traveled to a hockey tournament this past weekend. All proceeds from admission and 50-50 sales at the NHS hockey game vs. Escanaba on Tuesday, January 29 will be donated to the Johnson family. Please keep the Johnson Family and members of the Iron Range Miners hockey team in your thoughts and prayers.”
FROM THE MARQUETTE MUTINEERS HOCKEY TEAM:
“The Marquette Mutineers would like to thank everyone that braved the cold temps Sunday to come out to Lions Field and support the Johnson family. We raised over $1,500 in a couple hours! Our upcoming home game on [Friday,] February 8th will be dedicated to Will, Jake, and Kyle Johnson. Please come out to Lakeview Arena and support a local hockey family in this tragic time. Let’s show everyone what local Marquette hockey is really all about!”
The Mutineers are inviting all Iron Range teams to join them with their jerseys. Come out and show your support at Lakeview Arena on Friday 2/8. There will be a ceremonial puck drop by a Johnson family member at 7PM.
IRHA JOHNSON STRONG FUNDRAISER AT NEGAUNEE ICE ARENA
On Saturday, February 9th from 3-6PM at the Negaunee Ice Arena (141 Rail St.), the Iron Range Hockey Association will host a fundraiser for the Johnson family. I will update this post frequently as new event submissions come in.
January 28, 2019 – As you may know, my son Holden recently started the Learn to Skate program with the Iron Range Hockey Association in Negaunee. He loves it, and everyone involved is positively fantastic!
One thing that is amazing (yet doesn’t surprise me) is how tightly knit the hockey community is. We all know how tight knit the U.P. and all cities/towns/townships/villages within the U.P. are, and sports are no exception. That is how the IRHA is with the Hockey family, and it was clearly evident this weekend when tragedy struck one of our families within the IRHA.
Two IRHA players, Kyle and Jake Johnson, were traveling with their uncle Will Johnson to a downstate game on Friday. Unfortunately, they were in a horrible car accident in St. Ignace. Will passed away at the scene. Both Kyle and Jake were transported to a downstate hospital, where Jake passed away a day later at the hospital due to the severity of his injuries. Kyle is still fighting for his life with severe injuries with his family by his side.
I did not have the privilege of knowing this family, but I wish I had.
Because the Johnson’s are now faced with double the funeral expenses and medical bills, there are two GoFundMe accounts created to help alleviate the expenses incurred.
I hope that you will consider donating to this wonderful family in their time of need. If you’re unable to donate, I ask that you please share their accounts on social media.
Back to the mention of how tight knit our communities are; In less than two days, thousands have been raised for the family via Go Fund Me. But more is needed. Please see the page for Will’s funeral expenses HERE and for the family HERE.
I have been told that there are several fundraisers that have already taken place to help the family, and that more are in the works. Please keep an eye on the IRHA Facebook page for updates on these.
