Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Marquette Area Public Schools Superintendent Bill Saunders joined the SUNNY Morning Show with Walt & Mike today to talk about how he decides if the district shuts down or not due to bad weather.

Saunders says he received extensive messages and calls after MAPS canceled classes last Thursday due to an anticipated lake effect snow storm.

Marquette was the only district that closed down that day, and some areas in the district received very little snowfall, which prompted the calls and emails to his office.

Saunders explained that there are a series of protocols he follows in conjunction with others on the staff, including the district’s transportation supervisor, to arrive at a final decision.

He said he will always err on the side of caution and student safety and follows the same protocols whenever weather becomes and issue.

Saunders added that there is a mobile app for smartphones that can be installed for free by anyone looking to stay abreast of the latest weather-related announcements and other updates concerning the Marquette Area Public Schools.
