Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – A dangerous cold snap is affecting many areas in the region with extremely low wind chills across Upper Michigan this morning. A Wind Chill Advisory has been posted by the National Weather Service for most of the U.P. until noon eastern. Wind chills of around 25 to near 35 below zero are being reported in some areas.

Schools around the region are closed today including all public and parochial schools in Marquette, Alger, Delta, Schoolcraft, Luce, Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw, Ontonagon, Dickinson, Iron and Menominee Counties.

NMU is closed for Thursday, February 19, due to inclement weather. An announcement concerning evening classes will be made by 2 p.m.

Bay College has closed their Escanaba and Iron Mountain campuses for today.

Michigan State Police at Central Dispatch in Negaunee Township say M-28 is closed until further notice from Kawbawgam Road in Chocolay Township to Munising due to white out conditions resulting from high winds and snowfall. Most other areas around the Upper Peninsula are reporting snow covered to icy roads and high winds.

Lake effect snow and blowing snow will continue east of the Marquette/Alger County line. A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect until noon today for Alger County. Northwest winds gusting over 25 mph near Lake Superior are producing blowing snow that will lead to reduced visibility.
