Marquette, MI – (Great Lakes Radio News) – Bills sponsored by State Senators Tom Casperson and Rick Jones have been signed into law by Governor Rick Snyder to create a one-year pilot program allowing law enforcement officers to test drivers suspected of being under the influence of drugs.

Casperson joined the SUNNY Morning Show with Walt & Mike today to talk about the legislation.

The Escanaba Republican says the bills allow law enforcement officers trained as Drug Recognition Experts to administer a saliva test to drivers pulled over for suspected impaired driving.

Casperson says the saliva test would be in addition to the drug recognition 12-step evaluation currently used by DREs.

He added that a five-county pilot program will be in place for one year to help set limits for drugged driving similar to current limits in place for drunk driving.
