Marquette, MI -(Great Lakes Radio News) – Michigan U.S. Senator Debbie Stabenow is praising the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency removal of Deer Lake near Ishpeming from a list of the region’s most polluted waters.

Senator Stabenow called in to the SUNNY Morning Show to discuss the de-listing with News Director Walt Lindala.

Stabenow said Deer Lake had been listed since 1987 as one of two Michigan sites out of 43 U.S. and Canadian areas of concern.

The lakes were former industrial sites plagued by PCB’s, mercury, and other pollutants that led to drinking water restrictions, beach closures, and fish consumption advisories.

Stabenow said the announcement marks the latest progress in an effort by the federal government to accelerate restoration of the Great Lakes, including cleanup of toxic hotspots, through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.
