Negaunee, MI – January 4th, 2019 – On a warm Friday night, the Negaunee Miner Girls Basketball team took the court at home against the Manistique Emeralds.
After a slow shooting start from the Miners, they began to hit their stride as they took an early seven to two lead in the first quarter. The Miners continued to build on their momentum after a Manistique turnover, as the Miners got their lead up to double digits. Negaunee shared the ball very well in the opening quarter, and as a result their open shots were falling. Manistique found themselves in foul trouble early, as Negaunee was already shooting free throws in the bonus with under a minute to go in the quarter. Manistique ended the period on a strong note however, as the Emeralds knocked down a three point basket at the buzzer to cut the deficit to only 13 points.
End of First Quarter: Negaunee Miners 20, Manistique Emeralds 7
Negaunee’s ferocious defense continued into the second quarter as their full court pressure forced a turnover from the Emeralds. The Miners scored on a layup to bring the lead back up to 15. The Miner Girls Basketball team continued to play great team basketball, as they were finding easy looks at the basket. The Miners bumped the lead up to 22 quickly, their full court pressure continued to trouble Manistique. Negaunee made a huge statement on the defensive side of the floor, as they held the Emeralds scoreless in the second quarter. The Miners Girls Basketball team took a commanding 29 point lead heading into the locker room.
Halftime: Negaunee Miners 36, Manistique Emeralds 7
The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team came out with fire to begin the second half. Negaunee scored the first seven points of the half to bring the lead to 36 points. Both teams would then trade baskets and the lead stayed at 36 with over two minutes gone in the third quarter. The Emeralds began to get in a little bit of a groove, as they scored five straight points to cut into the deficit. Negaunee would come back with five straight points of their own, and their lead was stretched back to 36. The Miners would end the quarter strong as a three point shot at the buzzer would fall and it improved their lead to 45 points.
End of Third Quarter: Negaunee Miners 60, Manistique Emeralds 15
The scoring went to a halt in the final quarter of play, defense picked up for both teams. Manistique would score the only points of the quarter for either team with just over three minutes remaining. The Miners were held scoreless in the final period of play, but the game was far out of reach for the Emeralds. The Negaunee Miners Girls Basketball team would stay undefeated on the season, as they ran away with a 60-17 victory.
