Negaunee, MI – January 3rd, 2019 – It was time for more Negaunee Miners boys basketball as they
faced the Houghton Gremlins at home on a mild Thursday night. The omnipresent Jesse Anderson was in the gym to broadcast all the action to you live on Sunny 101.9FM!
The Negaunee Miners boys basketball team had a rough start to their game against the Houghton Gremlins, and they found themselves trailing seven to two halfway through the first. The Miners were finally able to add to their score late in the first, but they were having trouble keeping up with the Gremlins. Both teams weren’t afraid to use their fouls, and each team had four going into the second.
First Quarter Score
Negaunee Miners: 6
Houghton Gremlins: 9
The score was tight as the Negaunee Miners entered the second quarter against the Houghton Gremlins, but the Miners were giving it their all. Negaunee was able to tie the score up at 12-12 with just over five minutes left to play in the first half. Every basket was falling for the Miners as they took their first lead of the game with under four minutes left in the second quarter. Soon, it was 25-14 for Negaunee, and they looked to take a hefty lead going into the second half of play. Fouls were tied at eight-up, and the Gremlins started to have some players in danger of fouling-out early.

In the opening minutes of the second half, the two teams would trade baskets. Houghton would then go on a quick 7-0 run to cut the Negaunee Miners’ lead to just three points. The Miners would then score to take a five point lead halfway through the quarter. Negaunee then went on a 7-0 run of their own, as Jason Waterman scored seven consecutive points to get the lead back to double digits. As Negaunee began to build momentum of their own late in the third, Houghton stayed in it as the teams once again traded buckets. As the end of the quarter ticked down, Drew Lindberg made
a three pointer at the buzzer to give the Miners a 14 point lead heading into the final quarter of play.

Houghton Gremlins: 32
The Negaunee Miners started the fourth quarter strong, as they knocked down a three pointer to take a 17 point lead over the Gremlins. Houghton’s foul trouble began to really hurt them late in the game. Negaunee would get their lead up to 20 as Jakson Sager knocked down a three. Houghton wouldn’t give up however, and went on a quick 7-0 run to cut the lead down to 13. Time was not on the Gremlins side, as the score was still a 15 point lead in favor of Negaunee with two minutes to play. Houghton was forced to try and foul at the end, but Negaunee was strong at the free throw line to close out the game, and walked away with a 13 point home win.
