Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball defeats the Gwinn Modeltowners 49-47 for the District Championship on Sunny 101.9FM

Negaunee, MIMarch 1st, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team looked to continue their tournament run, as they hosted the Gwinn Modeltowners in the District 66 finals! Jesse Anderson had the call for all of the action between the Miners and the Modeltowners on Sunny 101.9FM.

1st Half:

The Miners started off the scoring, as they led 2-0 in the first minute of the game. After another Negaunee basket, Gwinn responded with a three-pointer. The Miners came back in a huge way, as they would make a three-pointer of their own while being fouled, the four-point play put them up 8-3. Both teams traded baskets, as Negaunee led 11-5 with under three minutes to go in the first quarter. The Modeltowners battled back once again, and cut Negaunee’s lead to 13-10. A late Miners’ lay-up gave them a 15-10 lead at end of the first quarter.

End of 1st: Negaunee Miners 15, Gwinn Modeltowners 10             

Negaunee scored to start off the second quarter, they now had a seven point lead. The Miners continued to score at will, their lead was up to 22-10 with five minutes remaining in the first half. Both squads traded baskets once again, and the Miners led 27-14 with three minutes left in the second quarter. After an impressive second quarter by the Miners, they led 32-19 over the Modeltowners after one half of play.

2nd Half:

Both teams went back-and-forth to start the second half, the Miners led 34-21. Gwinn went on a huge run, and cut the Negaunee lead to only two points! This game was close once again, and the Modeltowners weren’t going away quietly. The Miners responded with four straight points, but a pair of Gwinn free throws cut the lead to 39-34. The Modeltowners had a very impressive third quarter, as they trailed 41-34 going into the fourth quarter after a Negaunee buzzer beater.

End of 3rd: Negaunee Miners 41, Gwinn Modeltowners 34                

Gwinn scored on their first possession of the fourth quarter, and they cut Negaunee’s lead to 41-36. Neither team could get things going on offense for a few minutes, as the Miners led 43-36 with under five minutes remaining. The Modeltowners would break the drought, as they then trailed by five points once again. Negaunee led 47-40 with under two minutes to go, free throws and ball control were going to win them the game at this point. A pair of Gwinn free throws cut the Negaunee lead to 47-44 with under 30 seconds remaining. The Miners hit two huge free throws on the other end, they now led 49-44 with 21 seconds left. The Modeltowners made a huge three-pointer to cut Negaunee’s lead to two, but the clock ran out! The Negaunee Miners defeated the Gwinn Modeltowners 49-47 in a true test of survival, and the Miners are your District 66 Champions!
