Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball falls to the Marquette Redmen 67-36 on Sunny 101.9FM

Negaunee, MI February 14th, 2019 – The Negaunee Miners Boys Basketball team was back at home on Valentine’s Day evening, as they took on the Marquette Redmen with the Victors’ Cup on the line. Jesse Anderson had the call for all of the great action between the Miners and Redmen on Sunny 101.9FM!

1st Half:

The Redmen started off strong, as they took advantage of their size and led 4-0 early. Negaunee came out of the gates struggling, as they played sloppy to start the game. Marquette led Negaunee 9-0, a great start for the Redmen. The Miners would score their first points of the game with under three minutes to go in the first quarter. Negaunee trailed 13-2 to Marquette, they needed to get something going on offense fast. Negaunee started to find some offensive production, but they trailed 15-7 at the end of the first quarter.

End of 1st: Marquette Redmen 15, Negaunee Miners 7   

Marquette scored a lay-up to start off the scoring in the second quarter, they led 17-7. Negaunee was responding to the half-court trap Marquette was playing, as they scored two baskets in a row. After a Redmen basket, their lead was 21-11, Negaunee didn’t have any answers defensively. Marquette led 23-11 with three minutes to go in the first half, as they had firm control of this game. A quick 8-0 run by the Redmen put them up 31-11, this game was getting out of hand quickly. Neither team would score any points in the last couple minutes of the half, and the Redmen led by 20 at halftime.

2nd Half:

Marquette started the second half right they left off in the first half, as they led35-11. With five minutes remaining in the third quarter, the Redmen led 39-13. Marquette had a tremendous fast break game, they were doing an excellent job of pushing the ball down the floor off of Negaunee’s made baskets. The teams began to trade baskets, but that didn’t favor the Miners. The Redmen led 47-19, they were playing a complete game on both sides of the court. The Miners scored four quick points, and they trailed by 24 points with under a minute to go in the third quarter of play. The Redmen led 49-23 going into the fourth quarter.

End of 3rd: Marquette Redmen 49, Negaunee Miners 23    

The scoring began very quickly to start the fourth quarter, as the Redmen led 53-25. Marquette led 58-29 after a couple minutes of play, but the Miners were continuing to battle. Both teams put in their substitutes, as the Redmen led 62-30 with four minutes remaining in the game. The Marquette Redmen played a great game, and the scoreboard showed it. The last few minutes ticked down, and the Redmen cruised to a 67-36 win over the Negaunee Miners. Marquette took home the Victors’ Cup once again, as it was their sixth straight win against Negaunee.
